How Often Should I Backflush the Lelit Bianca?

✍️ By Mik Di Pacci · Founder & CEO, Di Pacci Coffee Company · Updated 2026

The Lelit Bianca is one of the finest dual-boiler, E61 group head espresso machines available for home and prosumer use. Backflushing is the single most important routine maintenance task for keeping it pulling clean, consistent shots. This guide covers how often to backflush, exactly how to do it, which cleaning products to use, and how to troubleshoot common issues.

⚡ Quick Answer

For 1–4 shots per day: water-only backflush daily, chemical backflush weekly. For 5+ shots per day: water backflush after every session, chemical backflush every 3–4 days. Use Cafetto Espresso Clean or equivalent blind basket cleaner — never descaler in the group head.

Backflush Frequency — By Usage Level

The right backflush schedule depends on how many shots you're pulling per day. The Lelit Bianca's E61 group head has small channels and check valves where coffee oils accumulate — these oxidise over time, turning rancid and adding bitterness to your espresso. Backflushing reverses the normal water flow to dislodge this build-up.

1–4 shots/day Home Barista
  • Daily — water-only backflush (5 cycles)
  • Weekly — chemical backflush with blind basket cleaner
  • Monthly — full group head disassembly and manual clean
5–15 shots/day Heavy Home / Prosumer
  • After each session — water-only backflush
  • Every 3–4 days — chemical backflush
  • Monthly — full group head disassembly
15+ shots/day Small Café / Office
  • End of each shift — water-only backflush
  • Daily close — chemical backflush
  • Weekly — full group head strip and clean
How to Backflush the Lelit Bianca — Step by Step

The Lelit Bianca uses a standard E61 group head with a solenoid valve — the same backflush procedure used on all E61-group commercial and prosumer machines. You'll need a blind basket (a portafilter basket with no holes) and for a chemical backflush, a backflush cleaner such as Cafetto Espresso Clean.

Water-Only Backflush

1
Insert blind basketRemove your standard basket from the portafilter and replace it with a blind basket. Lock the portafilter into the group head as normal.
2
Engage the pump for 10 secondsStart the pump as if pulling a shot. Water will build pressure against the blind basket and be pushed back through the group head channels and out through the solenoid valve. Run for 10 seconds.
3
Stop and pauseStop the pump. You will hear the solenoid click — this releases pressure and drains the group head. Wait 5 seconds.
4
Repeat 5–10 timesThe pulse action — pressure on, then release — is what dislodges built-up coffee oils. Repeat 5 cycles for a routine water backflush, 10 cycles for a more thorough clean.
5
Rinse the portafilterRemove the blind basket, rinse the portafilter and basket under hot water, then run a short flush through the group head (3–5 seconds) to clear any residue.

Chemical Backflush

1
Add cleaner to blind basketPlace 1/4 teaspoon (approx. 0.5–1g) of backflush cleaner (Cafetto Espresso Clean or equivalent) into the blind basket. Do not use descaling solution in the group head — use only espresso machine group head cleaner.
2
Lock in portafilter and run 5 cyclesLock the portafilter in and run 5 backflush cycles (10 seconds on, 5 seconds pause each). The cleaner will dissolve coffee oils. You will see dark, coffee-coloured water expelling from the solenoid drain — this is normal and expected.
3
Soak (optional for deep clean)After the initial cycles, leave the blind basket with cleaner in place for 10–15 minutes. This gives the solution time to break down stubborn oil build-up in the group head channels.
4
Rinse with 10 water-only cyclesRemove the cleaner residue from the basket, rinse it clean, replace in portafilter, and run 10 water-only backflush cycles. This fully purges all cleaner from the group head. Do not skip this step.
5
Final flush and taste testRun a 5-second flush through the group head. Pull a short test shot (discard it) and taste — if any soapy or chemical flavour remains, run two more water cycles and repeat.
What Cleaning Products to Use
🧴
Cafetto Espresso Clean — Recommended for Lelit Bianca

Cafetto Espresso Clean is the industry-standard backflush cleaner for E61 group head machines. Certified organic, biodegradable, and safe for all coffee machine components. Use 0.5–1g per chemical backflush cycle. Available at Di Pacci in various pack sizes.

What NOT to use:

  • Descaler — never use descaling solution in the group head. Descaler is for the boiler circuit only. Using descaler in the group head can damage seals and gaskets.
  • Dish soap or detergent — not designed for espresso machine use, leaves residue and can damage rubber components
  • Too much cleaner — more is not better. Excess cleaner is harder to rinse out and can leave a soapy taste in subsequent shots
Troubleshooting Common Backflush Issues
Problem Likely Cause Fix
Weak backflush — little water from solenoid drain Worn group head gasket or blocked solenoid valve Check and replace group head gasket first — it's the most common cause. If persists, solenoid valve may need cleaning or replacement.
Water leaking around portafilter during backflush Old or misaligned group head gasket Replace the group head gasket. On the Lelit Bianca, the group gasket is a standard E61 8.5mm gasket. Di Pacci stocks replacement parts.
Chemical taste persisting after rinsing Insufficient rinse cycles Run at least 10 water-only backflush cycles after every chemical backflush. Pull and discard a test shot. Repeat rinse cycles until the taste is completely clean.
Brown/dark water still coming out after many rinse cycles Significant oil build-up from infrequent cleaning Normal for machines that haven't been backflushed regularly — continue rinsing until water runs clear. Schedule more frequent chemical backflushes going forward.
No water expelled during backflush Solenoid valve not functioning The solenoid valve may be blocked or failing. Contact Di Pacci service on (02) 9758 0760 — this requires technician attention.

Full Lelit Bianca Maintenance Schedule — Beyond Backflushing

Backflushing is the most frequent maintenance task, but it's only part of keeping a Lelit Bianca in peak condition. Here's the complete maintenance picture:

  • Daily — water-only backflush, wipe steam wand immediately after every use, empty drip tray
  • Weekly — chemical backflush, clean portafilter baskets in a soak with backflush cleaner, wipe down machine exterior
  • Monthly — remove and manually clean shower screen, clean group head dispersion disc, inspect group head gasket condition
  • Every 3–6 months — replace water filter (if fitted), descale boiler circuit as required (separate to backflushing)
  • Annually — replace group head gasket and shower screen as preventive maintenance, full internal inspection by a qualified technician

Frequently Asked Questions
A blind basket (also called a blanking disc or backflush disc) is a portafilter basket with no holes — it blocks water from passing through, forcing pressure to reverse through the group head during backflushing. The Lelit Bianca uses a standard 58mm portafilter, so any 58mm blind basket will fit. Most Lelit Bianca machines come with a blind basket included in the accessories kit — check your original packaging. If you need a replacement, Di Pacci stocks blind baskets and accessories. Water-only backflushing cannot damage the machine — you can do it as frequently as you like. Chemical backflushing is safe when done with the correct product at the correct dose (0.5–1g of Cafetto Espresso Clean). Do not use descaler in the group head, and always follow chemical backflushing with at least 10 water-only rinse cycles. The only risk from backflushing is using the wrong product or insufficient rinsing — if you follow the correct procedure with a proper group head cleaner, there is no risk of damage.
Yes — descaling and backflushing are two separate maintenance tasks that address different parts of the machine. Backflushing cleans the group head of coffee oils. Descaling removes mineral scale from the boiler circuit and internal water pathways. Melbourne's water is moderately hard, so descaling frequency depends on your water quality and usage — typically every 3–6 months for home use. The Lelit Bianca has a built-in TDS sensor to alert you when descaling is required. Use a purpose-made espresso machine descaler for the boiler circuit — never use descaler in the group head. If your machine hasn't been descaled in over 12 months, Di Pacci's service team can handle it at our Sydney workshop →
Signs your Lelit Bianca needs a professional service beyond routine backflushing: shots pulling faster than usual at the same grind setting (suggests worn group gasket or blocked shower screen); water leaking from around the portafilter or group head area; unusual noises from the pump; machine taking longer than usual to reach temperature; or if you notice the solenoid valve not draining properly during backflush.
